Lopez Island at a Glance
Known as the Friendly Isle, Lopez Island is one Washington
State's San Juan
Islands. Stretching a mere 15 mi (24 km) in length and 8 mi (13 km) in width,
Lopez Island is a recreational paradise, as it boasts ideal conditions for kayaking,
biking, whale watching, hiking and fishing. A variety of tours are offered that
reveal the local natural beauty. Beaches and coastal hiking are popular activities
as well, with a number of trails winding along the island's coast. Getting to
Lopez Island is easy; visitors can take the ferry that leaves from Anacortes
and disembark at the ferry's first stop. A popular April event that draws hundreds
of visitors to this jewel of the San Juans is Tour
De Lopez, a bike ride that goes around the entire island. History enthusiasts
enjoy visiting the Lopez
Island Historical Museum, which boasts a number of pioneer artifacts, early
farm machinery and the first car to drive on this island.
